One remarkable example of skaters coming together to influence change is Skateistan, a non-profit organization based in Kabul, Afghanistan, that created the first skateboarding school in Afghanistan. Their mission is to engage urban and internally-displaced youth through skateboarding. For Go Skateboarding Day 2010, which occurs annually on June 21st, Skateistan is teaming up with skaters in Switzerland to connect the two cultures and secure donations for the charity. Along with collecting donations for Skateistan, skaters in Basel, Switzerland, will take to the streets and skate a 5000 meter (3.11 miles) trek across the city to represent the 5000 kilometer (3,107 miles) distance between Basel and Kabul. Concurrently, skaters in Kabul will be skating through the city in solidarity.

“Skateistan is working towards building trust between different Afghan ethnicities as well as between Afghans and foreigners. A deck and four wheels offer us the perfect tool to promote this,” said Oliver Percovich, Director of Skateistan.

“Go Skateboarding Day has always been about the global skateboard community getting together and having fun! It's amazing to see that it has also become a great day for skaters to give back to charities by raising money through events, donating products, or petitioning for a skatepark in their town. It's great to see that people around the world are taking the passion they have for skateboarding and using it to help those in need," said Don Brown, Chairman of the IASC Board of Directors and SVP of Marketing at Sole Technology.

Other charities and organizations that have drawn attention and funds by participating in Go Skateboarding Day include: JohnnyKicksCancer, Lee Matasi Foundation, Stoked Mentoring, Boys and Girls clubs, YMCA, A.skate Foundation, and Grind for Life to name a few as well as multiple skatepark fundraisers across the nation.

The 3rd annual Skateboarding Industry Summit was held April 28-30 at Woodward West, in Tehachapi, CA. With the Lodge sold out, a core group of attendees gathered to hear the likes of George Powell, Trent Martin (Cowtown Skateshop), and Nick Adcock weave a common thread throughout the conference - by working together we shape the future of our industry.

“The Summit gives the leaders in skateboarding a chance to come together in a non-competitive atmosphere to educate themselves on topics meant to broaden their perspectives and further their business.” says John Bernards, IASC executive director. “Combined with skateboarding on the amazing terrain at Woodward and some Azunia tequila ‘hot-shots’ it’s a great mix of learning and camaraderie.”

Speakers at this year’s summit touched on a varied range of topics including a dynamic insight into social media and how to utilize it, digital media and what we can expect next, as well as industry specific topics from veterans of pro competition, amateur skateboarding, and retailers from all over North America, including Cindy Mielke from West 49 in Canada. The highly charged topic of recognizing pro’s vs. am’s brought many of the industry participants to the table for discussion while staying true to the individualism of skateboarding if it is showcased in the Olympics was an eye opener for attendees.

Keynote speakers included George Powell and Nick Adcock, who with very different perspectives had similar messages. “If all we as an industry choose to think about is maximizing our own profit, gaining market share or stealing somebody else’s team rider, instead of banding together in a cohesive voice, then the powerful entities helping themselves to skateboarding will simply walk away with a very special sport, the culture and the industry we created during the three decades of hard work and dedication to the preservation of skateboarding as a free and evolving activity.” said Powell.

Thanks to everyone who attended and made this the best summit yet.

8th Annual Go Skateboarding Day Announced

Skateboarders to Hit the Streets June 21, 2010 & Shepard Fairey Creates 2010 Artwork

The International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC) announced the 8th annual Go Skateboarding Day to take place on the first day of summer, June 21st, 2010. This day brings together the skateboarding community and gets them out en masse for a day dedicated solely to skateboarding.

Go Skateboarding Day works to honor and unite participants in the spirit of skateboarding and since its 2003 inception has prompted cities to build skate parks, promoted local skate shops and raised money for local charities. Go Skateboarding Day started out as a small group of colleagues skating to the Huntington Beach Pier and has grown into a worldwide event with millions of participants. June 21st was selected as the official day because it is the longest day of the year and it marks the first day of summer. The event continues to grow exponentially each year as an official holiday and 2010 is sure to bring great achievements for the skateboarding community.

“[We see Go Skateboarding Day] continuing to get the global skateboard family together to share their passion, creativity and fun. As long as this happens mission accomplished,” said Don Brown, Chairman of the IASC Board of Directors and Vice President of Marketing at Sole Technology.

This year’s Go Skateboarding Day poster was designed by Shepard Fairey, the contemporary artist who has long been a supporter of the skateboarding community. Fairey first rose to popularity in the late 80’s with his Obey Giant street art campaign; today, his work can be found everywhere from street corners to the National Portrait Gallery. Known for his involvement with numerous charity organizations, the Go Skateboarding Day collaboration is another example of Fairey's commitment to the skateboarding community from which he emerged.

“Skateboarding changed my life,” said Fairey. “When I was a teenager, I needed a creative, physical outlet that didn’t require me to join a team, and skateboarding was just that. I enjoyed the aggression and stress relief it provided, as well as the creative progression it allowed me to make. The culture of skateboarding also inspired me to make stencils and homemade t-shirts, activities that led to the career I have today. I owe so much to skateboarding for its influence on me, so it’s a pleasure to try to inspire others to skate.”

Past collaborations have featured well-known artists including professional skateboarders Steve Caballero and Ed Templeton.

For more information, go to http://www.goskateboardingday.org/ or Facebook, to find local Go Skateboarding Day events. Flyers, information packs, and other materials to help skateboarders create their own events and spread the word are available on the Go Skateboarding Day Web site.
OMG!

Pro Competition Update
Professional contests are a highly visible, easily critiqued, and for some, a potentially lucrative part of the sport. They are, in many cases, the general public’s first view of the sport and therefore the representation of skateboarding is an important part of the culture. The top pro contest producers will share up coming changes to the contest landscape, the affect of digital /on-demand media on their business, and answer your questions.

Turning Insights Into Change
Throughout the two days of seminars at the IASC Summit, attendees will be exposed to new data/information, new thoughts and different ideas to help build their business and the overall skateboarding industry. However, taking that information or insights and turning them into actions that have an impact on your business is always the difficult part. In this hour seminar, Board-Trac’s Angelo Ponzi will utilize the information and findings from the previous seminars, Board-Trac research and other secondary/industry research and demonstrate how utilizing the available insights, marketing trends, retail trends and social media can have an impact on your business.
